What to do in case of insufficient bone structure?

In case of insufficient bone structure the bone will have to be augmented. In general, an implant requires at least 6 mms of bone width; otherwise bone augmentation is necessary. Artificial bone grafting material or bone from another part of the body is grafted into the bone. The other condition is a bone height of at least 8-10 mm. In the case of upper back teeth the proximity of the antrum (sinus maxillaris) makes implantation difficult. In certain cases a sinus lift is necessary, when bone mass is increased by raising the membrane of the sinus. It is a long-used safe technique to raise bone height.

Bone augmentation may take place at the same time as the placement of the implant, or, in extreme cases, first bone augmentation is performed, and only then, when after 6-8 months it is thoroughly healed, the implantation is done.
