Periodontology – Gingival Disease

The periodontium comprises the totality of the periodontal apparatus. This is an umbrella term for the gingiva, the dental cuticle, cement comprised by the root and the surrounding bones. This is divided into two groups: the gingiva and the other dental structures.
We do not go into the single diseases in this explanation, but we consider it much more important to explain the first symptoms of such diseases more fully. You ought to notice these diseases early and you should consult one of our specialists even when you only suspect it.

The gingival diseases are caused by a well adhering, film-like layer of plaque on the teeth or denture, out of which calculus can generate in case of no sufficient dental hygiene.

Nowadays these diseases are wide-spread, they affect 80-90% of the population.

Gingival inflammation (Gingivitis)

Symptoms:

- the gingiva is red and swollen
- bad breath
- gum bleeding when eating, brushing teeth or also spontaneously occurring
- pain – but this does not always occur

With thorough removal of plaque and calculus combined with a good dental care this disease is come to grips with and can be healed.

If the remaining periodontal apparatus is already affected in an advanced degree, not only gum bleeding is noticeable but it comes to a mobility of the teeth and of the bone structure.

Only with regular dental controls and the early detection and treatment the progress of this disease can be counteracted and thus the tooth loss caused by periodontitis can be prevented. Even if the disease is already in an advanced stadium, the process can be stopped and the teeth stabilize so that the periodontal apparatus can be preserved as long as possible.
